The year of 2009 will be remembered for many things within the casino industry in the US, but none may be more altering on the future of the industry than the separation of smoking and gambling. That change happened in many casinos across the US.

Individual states spent 2009 changing their smoking laws to help protect workers and patrons against second hand smoke at indoor facilities. Casinos, in many of these cases, were caught in the crossfire.

Casino lobbyists did their best to avoid being lumped into other public establishments, and in some cases, they won. There are states, such as New jersey, that have altered their laws to ensure that casinos are left out of the smoking bans.

Other states held tough on their stance that all people should be protected, and that includes workers inside casinos. In those states, the casinos are claiming that the smoking ban is hurting business, but research shows that the economy has been the major deterrent to gambling in 2009.

Some of the states have not completed laws on the smoking issue. In South Dakota, a smoking ban was passed for all bars, casinos, and establishments offering video lottery. The casinos and bars, however, had a judge rule that the issue should be decided by a statewide vote in 2010.

The new year will bring new issues for casinos throughout the US. The economy is still in recovery mode, and table games are being discussed in several states. Whenever these future decisions are made, it will be done with the idea that ash trays will not be needed on the gambling floors.
