2010 Around The Corner And Kansas Still Has No Casinos
Although there is already one casino in the process of being built in Kansas, the other three approved zones appear headed towards a longer wait for their casino. On Monday, the Lottery Gaming Facility Review Board began discussing the two proposals for Wyandotte County.
The issues remain the same for the state, they legalized casino resorts to help bring in tourists, but none of the developers submitted proposals have offered what the state is looking for. It has been an ongoing issue now for over two years.
Back in 2007, four state owned casino resorts were authorized. Wyandotte, Cherokee, Ford, and Sumner Counties were all approved for the casinos, but only Sumner has a casino currently being built. The Sumner casino is being created in Dodge City.
The other three zones all had developers approved last year for contracts to build casinos. The economy, however, caused the developers to pull out of their deals and that moved the state back to stage one of accepting applications.
Wyandotte County received two applications this year, and the Review Board is now discussing whether or not to allow either of the projects to move forward. The main issue is that both projects are not guaranteeing hotels in phase one of their development.
That has left members of the Review Board cynical to the motives of these developers. The board has the option of again turning away the applicants, but it is a risky proposition. Other developers that may have been interested have stayed away because of the way Kansas officials have handled the process.
