4,298 Sign Against Casino Proposition

Voted Top Online Casino Several Years in a Row!

Jerry Hjelden, an opponent of a casino in Grand Forks, holds up a petition signed by citizens opposing a casino in the city that he presented to the Grand forks City Council Monday evening.Opponents of a proposed Indian casino brought a petition with 4,298 signatures Monday before the Grand Forks City Council.

That number represents about 11 percent of eligible voters in the city though Jerry Hjelden, the head of the Grand Forks Petition Committee, said the group could fetch many more signatures given more time. The signatures were met with silence from council members, a silence that proved puzzling to both Hjelden and council member Eliot Glassheim, the only council member to openly oppose the casino so far. When people submitted 265 signatures to rezone the UND neighborhood, Glassheim said, "there was listening, there were concerns. Forty-two hundred people signed this petition, and there was silence."
