Catholic Bishop Denounces Casino Gambling in Calgary
A battle over the morality of casino gambling and the authority over Catholic education has erupted, with a Roman Catholic bishop taking aim at a school board and the practice of raising revenue from casino gambling and bingo to pay for school programs.
In a June 20, 2006, Bishop Frederick Henry of Calgary called on each of the 97 schools in the 44,000-student Calgary Catholic School District "that engage in immoral fund raising" to "get out of bingo and casino gambling" activities or face consequences, including "blacklisting." The bishop did not indicate what that blacklisting would include. He further said that, due to "my disagreement" with the school board, that he would not attend the district's annual school-opening liturgy.
"It is morally wrong for a Catholic institution to formally co-operate in an industry that exploits the weak and the vulnerable," wrote Bishop Henry. "The end does not justify the means."
