For over twenty five million people in the US their Tuesday nights just became a little bit clearer. American Idol returned tonight and just like in past years, producers are hoping the rejects will mean ratings.

They started out the new season by giving a musical rundown of the last seven seasons to Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World." It ended with last years winner, David Cook, pictured. Then, they briefly introduced their new judge Kara DioGuardi.

Once the pleasantries were out of the way, it was on to the new season. They began their coverage of the tryouts from last year in Arizona. The two hour show went through some of the good, and plenty of the bad of the auditions in Arizona.

The number of bad performances that appeared was somewhat of a shock after rumors were circulating that the shows producers were going to stay away from many of the bad performances. Old habits die hard.

It did not appear that there were many truly great singers in the first show, but only about ten of the almost thirty people who made it to Hollywood week from Arizona were actually shown singing.

The highlights of the show was a confrontation between DioGuardi and one of the contestants wearing a swimsuit to the audition. They battled back and forth verbally until the scene ended with the bikini girl being sent to Hollywood. DioGuardi seemed shocked that the two men of the panel, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell, put the girl through.

The first week of Idol continues on Wednesday when they turn their attention to Kansas City.
