Another Push in California to Bring Gambling
A bill has been introduced in the Legislature that would allow up to 13,000 slot machines at horse racing tracks across the state.
The legislation could have its first committee hearing as early as this week. Electronic gaming experts have devised a machine that replays real horse races from years past. Gamblers bet much as they would a real horse race.
Officials in the horse racing industry say such software prevents the machines from being labeled 'slots' but, in fact, there is very little difference between the machines in this proposal and the ones gamblers pour their cash into at land-based casino resorts and at dozens of other casinos throughout California.
The state's indiansare certain to spend millions fighting this proposal, just as they did Proposition 68 two years ago. That ballot measure would have allowed slots at horse tracks and card rooms. Those governments spent $33 million defending their monopoly on slot machines, and Prop. 68 received only 16 percent of the vote.
