Arkansas Set for Casino Slots this November
In a surprising turn of events, Arkansas officials are ready to bring slot machine gambling into the mainstream. For the past-quarter century, slot-machines have been outlawed state-wide.
Now, Arkansas has decided to allow 2 racetracks to offer electronic slots with names like White Hot Aces and Sizzling 7s.
The video poker and blackjack machines, known legally as electronic games of skills, will open up next month. Both Southland Park in West Memphis and Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs plan grand opening celebrations for the new gambling equipment, which will bring much needed tax revenue into state and local offices.
But in Arkansas, a state without its own lottery, police continue to shut down illegal gambling operations run out of arcades and veterans' halls.
Danny Walker of the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration says Southland Park should receive 800 of the machines while Oaklawn Park will get 130.
Beginning Monday, state employees and a contracted company will electronically test the machines. Once the machines are running, state employees also will do daily audits on the machines and verify jackpots.
