The Atlantic City casino industry is already on the fringe of falling apart, and now they have a new issue to address. Pennsylvania lawmakers have completed legislation to legalize table games in the state's casinos.
This could end up being a devastating blow for an Atlantic City casino industry that cannot afford to take any more punches. With the casinos still experiencing double digit declines in revenue on a monthly basis, more competition is the last thing they need.
"This move by Pennsylvania could completely shift the balance of power in the casino industry in the Northeast," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz, "AC customers are ripe for the picking, and it seems that all of the neighboring states are going after the business."
Last year, Connecticut tribal casinos that are competing for customers in the state, teamed up to steal customers from AC. The two major casinos took billboard ads along the New Jersey Turnpike, encouraging gamblers to come north to Connecticut.
Add to that the fact that the ACES transportation project was a complete disaster, and increased casino options in New York, and the AC casino industry has withstood about as much as it can take without folding.
Developers who have a fascination with Atlantic City have vowed to help the city and the casino industry rebound, but as of yet that has not happened. Several casinos have gone into bankruptcy, while others have trimmed jobs to deal with the economic hardships.
It may not cause the end of the Atlantic City casino industry, but Pennsylvania lawmakers dealt the city a major blow. Now, the industry must get up off the mat and fight if they want to remain relevant in the future.
