Atlantic City Casinos And Unions Continue To Work Toward Agreement
Atlantic City casinos and the unions that represent their employees have had some harsh battles in the past. This time around, however, the two sides are continuing to play nice because both sides know the ramifications that could accompany any type of breakdown.
The Atlantic City casino industry has been ravaged by the economy and growing competition in the past couple of years. On Tuesday, a deal expired between the casinos and hotel workers, but negotiations are continuing, and the casinos and the union that represents over 15,000 workers, both know this is no time for pandering.
"There is too much for both sides to lose if the workers decide to strike," said CGW casino gaming anaylsy, Steve Schwartz, "the workers need to keep their jobs because they cannot afford to go without pay in this economic climate, and the casinos cannot afford to have any missteps in their daily operations."
The United Auto Workers, which represents dealers and technicians at the AC casinos, see things from a different perspective, however. The Union has authorized strikes at three casinos, although the workers have yet to follow through on that threat. Even with the strikes authorized, there is optimism that a deal could be reached to avoid the strikes.
Atlantic City casinos have had revenue decrease in double digits for many months in a row. Renovation and new projects have almost all been put on hold when the economy collapsed. Recently, Donald Trump and Carl Icahn have made attempts to become more prominent figures in the city's gaming industry.
