Atlantic City Casinos May Go Smokeless By Next Year
Step off the boardwalk in Atlantic City and step inside one of the thirteen world renowned casinos and you may want to step right back outside again onto the boardwalk where you can breathe clean, well, cleaner air. That all may be changing soon as the Atlantic City City Council has proposed a new law that would completely ban smoking in all Atlantic City public places.
When New Jersey banned smoking indoors in public places in April Atlantic City casinos were carefully excluded from the deal much to the satisfaction of smoking gamblers who frequent them. However, the new proposal was unanimously agreed upon and it could change the exemption.
The law that was passed by New Jersey gave cities the power to enforce stronger enforcements of the ban at a later date. That later date has finally been reached.
If the ordinance is adopted by the city council and signed by the mayor, it would not go into effect until sometime next year. The council is to hear from the public at hearings scheduled for Nov. 29 and Dec. 13, and could consider the measure for final adoption on Dec. 29. If adopted and signed by the mayor, it would take effect 20 days later.
