Atlantic City Casinos Prepare For Strike And Replacement Dealers
Dealers at two Atlantic City casinos have voted in favor of striking, and the casinos are now preparing for the time when the strike becomes a reality. The casinos have said that they will be hiring replacement dealers when the strike occurs.
"We take their threats seriously," said J. Carlos Tolosa, eastern regional President of Harrah's Entertainment, "There are 14,000 employees in Atlantic City who rely on Harrah's for their livelihood, and we are not going to let the misguided tactics of the UAW (United Auto Workers) interfere with our guests or the employees who are working hard to keep Atlantic City competitive this summer."
Dealers authorized strikes at Caesars Atlantic City and Bally's Atlantic City this past weekend. Workers at the Tropicana Casino and Resort have already authorized a strike in previous months. No strike date has been set as of yet.
Atlantic City casinos have been dealing with bad news on an almost daily basis. Their revenue has dropped by double digits for several months in a row, and they cannot take the chance of the revenue slipping even further because of a dealers strike.
Dealers joining a union is something new to Atlantic City casinos. While other casino workers have been unionized for years, dealers have just recently started to be approached by the UAW. Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino dealers also have unionized, but they have yet to vote on a strike.
Striking at a time when the economy is this bad is a major risk for these dealers. The casinos have already began laying off employees, and if the strike is unsuccessful, many of these dealers could lose their jobs permanently.
