Atlantic City Expanding Gambling Area With Penn National Casino
Atlantic City was once the place where the Rat Pack was most comfortable. Lavish casinos on the Boardwalk and all the glamour of Hollywood on the East Coast. That was then, this is now.
Lately, Atlantic City has been trying to figure out how to once again become the top casino gambling destination on the East Coast. First, they started tearing down some of their older casinos and replacing them with new ones.
Others that survived complete demolition, have been renovated and taken up to the standards of today's gamblers. Their latest move, however, shows just how desperate they are to get back on top.
The City Council on Wednesday night approved the rezoning of Route 30 to allow for a casino. Penn National will be the developers of the casino and will build where there used to be an oil depot.
Traffic will be a significant challenge for the planned casino. "If we're not right about the traffic, this project goes down. People have to be able to get to our building. If they can't, we lose," said George Miller, an attorney for Penn National.
Difficult economic times lead to difficult decisions, and the one by the City Council on Wednesday night was certainly a difficult one. The city, however, is gambling that it pays off.
