Auto Workers Union Showing Their Clout With Casino Smoking Ban
Foxwoods Resort Casino owners should have known who they were getting in the ring with. They are challenging the results of a vote that allowed dealers to organize under the United Auto Workers Union's guidance.
While that court battle is going on, the Workers Union decided to show Foxwood owners just how much pull they have in politics. They have initiated a proposal to ban smoking in Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos.
The Mashantucket Tribe, who owns both casinos, has no plans of adhering to a smoking ban, even if it becomes law. Their stance may be short lived, however, as the Attorney General, Richard Blumenthal believes that a smoking ban would be upheld in Federal Court.
Legislators are planning on negotiating with the tribe before putting the ban in effect in February of next year. If negotiations are not successful, the ban would be implemented.
The smoking ban proposal was part of the Union's efforts to create a safe working environment for their members. It is also another way of showing owners from Foxwoods that their legal challenges pale in comparison to the power that the union possesses.
