Beach Lures Gamblers To AC Casinos On Memorial Day Weekend
It has been a rough couple of years for the Atlantic City casino industry. First, the economy helped keep customers away, and then neighboring states expanded their gambling options and began targeting Atlantic City casino clientele.
This Memorial Day weekend, Mother Nature did something that the casinos themselves could not accomplish in recent years, the weather brought people to the tables. Good weather had many vacationers traveling to the Atlantic City boardwalk for food, fun, and of course, gambling.
"The weather was perfect, and that was a big help," said Mark Juliano, CEO of Trump Entertainment Resorts, as reported by the Press of Atlantic City. "When the weather cooperates, people come. The lure of the Jersey Shore for a Memorial Day weekend is pretty powerful."
The weather itself, was nice all weekend long, but there have been several periods over the past few years when the weather has been equally nice, and customers still have not shown up at the casinos. It is clear that the economy also played a part in bringing gamblers back.
"In the past couple of years, people had to stay home for Memorial Day weekend because they were out of jobs or money was tight," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz. "This year, the economy is starting to turn around, and travelers once again have some extra money to spend on vacations."
While the news was good this past weekend, it does not mean that AC casinos are in the clear. Pennsylvania and Delaware have both legalized table games at their casinos, and the increased gaming options are sure to steal some customers away from New Jersey.
Last summer, Connecticut's two major casino resorts teamed up for a billboard campaign along the New Jersey Turnpike, encouraging travelers to come to Connecticut to gamble.
