Beau Rivage Resort And Casino Gambling Up With Jay Leno In Town
Celebrities can often be counted on to help different areas of the US after catastrophes. Jay Leno came to the aid of many in the Gulf Coast region on Saturday night, using his comedic presence to help raise money in the aftermath of the BP oil spill.
The Beau Rivage Resort and Casino was the beneficiary of increased gambling revenue on Saturday night thanks to Leno. The comedian performed a show in from of over 1,000 people to raise money for the Gulf Coast Community Foundation. Tickets ranged in price from $40 to $150.
"I came out tonight because I knew that the event was to raise money to help the region recover from the oil spill, and for us it was a fun night out," said Maury Braden, who attended the show with a couple of his friends. "I even was able to do some gambling after the show, so in all it was a fun night."
The casino industry in the Gulf Coast has been up and down in the past decade. After experiencing large growth, the industry was hurt by the devastation from Hurricane Katrina. Several casinos had to close their doors, with others having to overcome a major clean up effort.
Then, as the casinos were rebounding, the economic recession hit in the US. Since 2008, casino revenue has been down at the Gulf Coast casinos that are located in both Louisiana and Mississippi. The Beau Rivage must have been pleased with the turnout for the Leno show that raised almost $100,000 on the night.
Casinos all across the US have experienced similar revenue problems in the past couple of years. Las Vegas and Atlantic City, two of the largest gaming destinations in the world, have both experienced a sharp decline in revenue, with AC casinos mired in the worst slump of their existence.
