Belmont Could Be Next In Line For Expanded Gambling In New York
Once the ball starts rolling, it is hard to stop. The ball in this case is gambling, and the state of New York is where it has began to roll.
Last week it was announced that Aqueduct would be getting slot machines for their facility under a new plan that was endorsed by both Governor David Patterson and Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos.
This week, Patterson and Skelos have turned their attention to Belmont. They have proposed that rapid development begin at Belmont to stay on par with Aqueduct.
As for the Aqueduct project, that will include 4,500 slot machines, a spa, hotel, and conference center. That project is being developed by Delaware North Cos. of Buffalo, New York. They were chosen mainly thanks to the $370 million they will have to give the state up front.
In addition to the up front money, the state will receive a portion of the revenue that is generated at the facility from the video lottery terminals. A similar plan could be devised for Belmont.
It has been California that has been leading the nation towards expanded casino gambling, but New York has caught on quickly. Other states are also exploring there options, and some even have gambling questions on the ballot in the upcoming election next week.
