Belmont Dog Track Close To Final Approval
The state Pari-Mutuel Commission was meeting this morning to review the status of the gaming license application filed by the consortium that now owns and wants to reopen the former Lakes Region Greyhound Park in Belmont.
Although what will be discussed wasn't immediately known, it is expected that the review signals the conclusion of the New Hampshire Attorney General's vetting process, including an audit, of Marlin Torguson of Bay St. Louis, Miss. and Belmont Racing LLC, the group he leads.
If the AG's work is done, that potentially clears the way for the commission to vote up or down on Belmont Racing's application to have simulcast racing and also a live racing schedule at what has been renamed "The Lodge at Belmont. "The dog track closed in April 2005 following the indictment of two employees of its past owner, New Hampshire Gaming LLC, in connection with an illegal gambling and money-laundering ring in New York.
Subsequently, New Hampshire Gaming agreed to surrender its license and to put the track up for sale as part of an agreement with Attorney General Kelly Ayotte. If the Pari-Mutuel Commission does act affirmatively on his client's application this morning, track lobbyist Rick Newman said "The Lodge at Belmont," which has been recast as a year-round "destination" attraction that features a blues club and an upscale steakhouse, could be open within days.
