New Orleans Dealing with Troubled Waters
If things had gone according to plan, people would be partying on the Big Easy today, gambling, drinking and enjoying a sea cruise to nowhere. Instead, the casino ship plans to leave the Port of Palm Beach on Monday. And Murray has lost a small fortune.
The failure of Big Easy is a major setback for Murray's Palm Beach Casino Line, which had hoped to build a franchise for casino ships in West Palm Beach. It is a case example of how the best-laid plans can be ruined by unforeseen events. The debacle matters not only to Murray and the 300 workers who had hoped for employment on Big Easy , but to the port, which now has some of its valuable dock space ensnared in a long-term contract that it is trying to break.
Now the question is whether the financial mess left by Big Easy will drag down the more successful Palm Beach Princess , another day cruise ship that is collateral for some $30 million in loans to Murray's companies.
