Bilingual Problem Gambling Treatment Spreading Through US
With casino gambling becoming more prevalent in the US, treatment for problem gamblers has become an issue that is being discussed in many states. Treatment centers are being opened with more frequency than ever before.
A large percentage of gamblers in the US come from the Asian community. That leaves treatment centers in the precarious position of having to try to treat problem gamblers that do not speak English well.
That problem has started to be corrected in several different areas throughout the country. In California, the Office of Problem Gambling has announced that they will be creating bilingual treatment programs.
"These type of programs are necessary because of the large amount of Asians that gamble in the US," said observer Beverly Ionody, "If casinos are going to target Asian customers as they have, then the proper treatment programs need to be in place."
In California, as with many other states, money is set aside from casino gambling revenue to deal with the issue of problem gambling. California has $5 million put aside that will help start the bilingual treatment programs.
States have been using casino gambling as a way to help with budget deficits over the past couple of years. With the laws changing drastically in a short period of time, the problem gambling issue is not always addressed in a timely manner. California is trying to lead by example in this area.
