Bill Halter Campaign Promotes Lottery
Bill Halter, left, talks to Robert and Bearl Wilkinson about his campaign for Lt. Governor on Friday at Bobby's Family Restaurant on the court square. Lt. Governor candidate Bill Halter brought his campaign to Bobby's Family Restaurant on the court square in Searcy Friday morning, shaking customers' hands and answering questions. In the eatery, Halter encountered several apparent supporters of online gambling at casinos, as well as some polite opposition to his views on a lottery for education. Bobby's is known by some as an early-morning haunt of Republicans and Harding students. The common thing I'm hearing is that folks want to make sure we make some progress in education, Halter said.
Three other Democrats will vie with Halter May 23 for that party's nomination: Senator Tim Wooldridge, State Representative Mike Hathorn, and State Representative Jay Martin. Three Republicans are fighting for the seat are Senator Jim Holt, State Representative Jim Matayo and Charles Banks. Retiring White County Justice of the Peace Vernon Shourd, who was having his usual oatmeal and eggs, disagreed with Halter about the ethical implications of a lottery. Shourd compared Arkansas' lack of a lottery to the absence of liquor stores and bars in the community.
