Caesars Windsor Casino Lays Off Over 100 Employees In Canada
It is not only US casinos that are struggling in the current economy. Macau casino revenue has been off, and now word has come down that Caesars Windsor, in Canada, has laid off over 100 employees.
The union that represents Caesars Windsor employees, CAW Local 444, claims that sixty-nine full time jobs have been lost. The union also contends that thirty-four part time employees have been fired. In both cases, the layoffs were considered indefinite.
"It is clear that the casino was losing revenue and could not afford to keep these employees working," said observer Gary Brees, "this is not the first casino to fire employees during this difficult economic time, and it will not be the last."
New passport requirements are hurting business at the casino. People from Detroit are commonly found in Caesars Windsor, but Detroit's casino industry may have taken much of that business away from the Canadian casino.
The summer has not been as bad for the casino as previous months, but once the summer ends, revenue is again expected to drop at Caesars. If there is another drop off, there is a strong chance that even more employees will lose their jobs.
