California Casino Still Searching For Elusive Alcohol License
Alcohol and casino gambling seem to go hand in hand. Not to say that everyone that gambles in a casino is an alcoholic, but the occasional drink does fit in with the casino atmosphere.
That is not the case for one Indian casino in California. Sycuan Casino is the only tribal casino in the country that does not have a liquor license. They hope that is about to change.
Fifteen years ago the casino tried for a liquor license. They were denied by a judge who claimed alcohol sales would create a traffic hazard. That is according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.
The tribe accepted their failed attempt back then and proceeded to pour money into helping fix the traffic problem. "It's fundamentally a different situation today then it was then. The tribe spent millions of dollars on road and traffic safety improvements in and around Dehesa Road and Sycuan Road," said Assistant Tribal Manager, Adam Day.
The tribe is receiving opposition to them acquiring the liquor license. The Dehesa Valley Community Council has organized a letter writing protest to keep the casino from receiving the license.
"We're trying to put together a case and information to send in protest and get as many people that are interested in it to protest," said Pat Riggs, the Council President.
