California Lottery Gives More Time For Claiming Gambling Jackpots

Mega Millions is mega popular among gamblers in several states. The game is a multi-state lottery, where the winners can win jackpots that vary, but are always in the millions.

California gamblers who played the game, were at a disadvantage than those in other states when it came to claiming jackpot wins. They only had six months to claim their winnings.

That will now change to twelve months after Governor Schwarzenegger signed a Bill into law that will change the allotted time from six months to a year.

"This legislation should allow us to put the concerns about Mega Millions behind us. Californians can now continue to enjoy this exciting game and the more than $834 million in cash prizes since the California Lottery began offering Mega Millions in 2005," said Joan Borucki, Director of the California Lottery.

The concern was that people in other states had twelve months to claim their winnings, while in California it was only six. If the prize went unclaimed after six months and then were cashed in other states, California stood the small chance of losing the revenue generated.
