Calvin Borel Joins Fight For Expanded Video Gambling In Kentucky

Along with winning in major US sporting events come fame. For most athletes, that fame comes with some sense of responsibility to throw their support behind a cause. That cause for jockey Calvin Borel is expanded video gambling in Kentucky.

Borel, fresh off his wins at both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, came out on Monday in support of expanded video gambling in the state of Kentucky. Borel's name and words are both being used to rally gambling proponents in the state.

"If it doesn't pass soon, then we will fall way behind, and those hard-working people all over Kentucky who take care of the horses will have to relocate to other states," said Borel, in a letter issued in which Borel supported the expanded gambling.

The Kentucky Equine Education Project is the group that released the letter. They are helping push legislation that would bring expanded video gaming machines to Kentucky's horse racing tracks. The governor has been adamant about wanting expanded gambling in the state.

Last week, Beshear left the gambling issue off of the agenda for an expanded legislative session. he realized his mistake and the next day the issue was once again added to the list of issues to be discussed.

The legislative session will be held the week of June 15th. The state budget is the main issue for the session, but the gambling issue will be heavily tied to any budget discussions.
