Can Macau Casino Gambling Industry Survive Without Stanley Ho?
Stanley Ho is to Macau casino gambling what Hulk Hogan is to wrestling. The two men have had a severe impact on their industry like few others have ever experienced, but, like wrestling, Macau casino gambling must go on without its brightest star.
Ho has had increasing physical impairments that have left him unable to handle many of his day to day operations. As he eneters into the latter stages of his life, Macau and their casino industry is left to wonder who will take over for the casino tycoon.
His family almost seems out of the question. There have been many rifts between Ho and his children. His daughter, Pansy Ho, has had several legal disagreements with her father, and it seems unlikely she will take over his rein. His sons have also had battles with their father, and it has left some to believe there will be no lasting legacy.
"Since Macau opened its markets to foreign investors the era of Stanley Ho has been diminishing gradually," said Zeng Zhonglu of the Macau Polytechnic Institute, "I don't think there will be another figure like Stanley Ho, that time has gone."
Ho has successfully run a gambling monopoly in Macau long before any foreign investors saw the possibilities of profit. In 2002, however, that monopoly came to an end. US-based gaming companies began to build big casino resorts, and Macau blew up into the biggest casino gambling location in the world.
Now, Ho is on his way out of the business that he helped create in Macau. The question remains-Who will be the person that takes the throne from the mighty casino industry king?
