Canal Fulton Council May Postpone Casino Decision
The Canal Fulton City Council may postpone its decision to enter into negotiations with the Eastern Shawnee tribe of Oklahoma on bringing a casino to the northwest corner of Stark County. The council was scheduled to vote tonight on a "memorandum of understanding", an agreement to try to negotiate a final deal.
But Mayor John Grogan and Council President Linda Zahirsky are unable to attend the meeting, scheduled for 7 p. m. at City Hall, 155 E. Market St. Some have recommended that the legislation be postponed, Councilman Victor Colaianni said today. But it still might be voted upon, he added. The Eastern Shawnee have proposed building a casino resort along state Route 21 on property in Lawrence Township. The resort would have slot machines, restaurants, shopping, a hotel, a concert venue and possibly a water park. In return for its support, the city would receive up to 2 percent of the revenue.
