Allentown Casino Applicants Put Effort into Mailing Campaign
With Friday's deadline to comment on gambling proposals looming, the casino operators behind proposals in Allentown and Bethlehem have turned up the heat in their public relations campaigns and mailed thousands of glossy fliers that give residents a quick and free way to show their support.
Sands Bethworks Gaming sent out 30,000 full-color booklets, which highlight the buzz words of jobs and the historic preservation of the iconic Bethlehem Steel plant. The mailer includes two postcards to sign and send to the state Gaming Control Board in support of the project in south Bethlehem.
"We wanted to make it as easy as possible for our supporters to comment," said Andy Abboud, president of corporate relations for Las Vegas Sands. "Typically, the naysayers are more vocal whether it is a school bond issue, casino or any other measure."
A few weeks ago, Aztar Corp. sent out similar mailings describing how the Tropicana's "world-class casino" is "an opportunity that Allentown can't afford to lose," punctuating how it would bring in 750 construction jobs, 1,300 full-time jobs and $525 million in investment.
