Casino Debate Heats Up in Miami-Dade County With Vote Getting Close

Miami-Dade will be seeking to legalize slot gambling much like neighboring county Broward did a few years ago. Voters in Miami-Dade have had their opportunity before, and have said no thank you to slots.

This time around may be different, however. People have seen what legalizing has done for Broward County. They also are not enjoying traveling to Broward every time they want to enjoy a night of gambling.

The subject will be voted on once again this year in Miami. The County's three gambling establishments, Gulfstream Park, Flagler Dog Track, and Miami Jai Alai, all will be campaigning to have the slots approved this time around.

On the other side, No Casinos Miami, a group who opposes casino gambling, has begun to rally against slots. Rev. Tom Gray is the head of the group, and he believes that if the slots are approved, crime would go up in the areas around the casinos.

It is an old argument that all opponents to casino gambling have used. What is lacking with the argument, however, is evidence of their opinions. Hollywood city officials have reported that there has not been an increase in crime since Broward approved the slots.

No Casinos Miami have begun their rallying on Wednesday in Miami-Dade.
