Delaware Casino Expansion Placed on Hold
Efforts to add more slots casinos in Delaware have dropped beneath the waves for yet another year. Members of the House Gaming and Pari-Mutuels Committee voted Wednesday to put on hold a constitutional amendment that would have authorized the addition of two casinos in Wilmington, and expanded allowable games at all venues. That, said Rep. Vincent Lofink, R-Caravel Farms, probably kills the measure, because Wednesday was the last day for regularly scheduled committee hearings.
The expansion of venues has been pushed by supporters of two companies who want to build large entertainment and casino complexes along the Christina River. They say the new locations would bring jobs and needed revenue to the city. But efforts to add new sites have attracted opponents who are either philosophically opposed to gambling or who, like Gov. Ruth Ann Minner, are convinced that more venues merely dilute the existing base of gamblers.
