It used to be that if people wanted to gamble in a casino, they would have to go to Las Vegas, Nevada. No matter what country they were from, Sin City was one of their only options. Now, casinos are popping up all over the world, the latest on which to open is in Guyana.
South America is not the first continent that comes to mind when people think about casino gambling, but that may be changing. This weekend, the Princess Casino Guyana opens its doors to customers. The resort is expected to help build tourism in the country.
The rules surrounding the casino show just how much the government is counting on tourism to drive the economy. Locals are not allowed to gamble in the casino unless they are checked in as guests at the hotel.
The nation has long been conservative, and church groups had fought against the addition of the casino. The compromise was that locals would not be permitted to gamble. The idea is that the social ills typically associated with casinos would not have to be worried about within the country's people.
Attracting customers will be a major challenge for the casino's marketing department. Only 300,000 tourists currently make their way to Guyana, and in order for the casino to generate revenue, they will need to find a way to bring more gamblers to the country.
Global casino expansion is at an all-time high. Many countries have expanded their laws to allow for casinos. In the US, casino gambling has become one of the top industries in the country. Individual states are adding casinos to help deal with their economic shortcomings caused by the recent recession.
