Casino Gambling Issue In Ohio Receives Full Firefighters Support

Opponents of casino gambling in Ohio believe that casinos would bring a need for extra police and firefighters to control crime. Firefighters unions in the state, however, believe that the casinos will actually help the state increase public safety.

Two unions, the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 92 in Toledo, and the IAFF Local 67 in Columbus, have joined unions in Cleveland and Cincinnati in supporting Issue 3. That makes it unanimous in the four cities that would receive casinos that firefighters are behind the expanded gambling.

The reason, according to all four unions, is simple. The millions of dollars that will be generated and used for local governments would only strengthen law enforcement and public safety in the state. It is a belief that is shared by many public safety officials.

Already in the corner of Issue 3 are the Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio, the Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association, the Toledo Police Patrolmen's Association, the Ohio Patrolmen's Benevolent association, and the FOP Capital City Lodge #9 in Columbus.

The inclusion of all of these groups as supporters only strengthens what is already looking like a casino win in the November election. Residents of Ohio have done an about face on the casino issue, and appear ready to embrace casino gambling.

Recent polls suggest that Ohio voters are in favor of the casino expansion with nearly sixty percent saying they will vote in favor of Issue 3. That is a stark contrast to the past several attempts, when casino referendum's have been turned away by voters in Ohio.
