This week it was revealed that the Ohio Jobs and Growth Committee, which was the driving force behind the push for legalized casino gambling in Ohio, raised $48 million to fuel their efforts. The amount of money spent on the campaign topped $28 million.
The big spending spree paid off for the group and other casino supporters. In November, for the first time ever, voters in the state of Ohio voted in favor of casino gambling in the state. There will be four casinos coming to the biggest cities in the state.
The amount spent by the pro-gambling group far outweighed the money spent by anti-gaming groups. The anti-gambling group, funded largely by TruthPAC, raised and spent only $9 million. The difference in the amount spent have some believing that it put casino gambling over the top.
"Anytime you have two sides of a campaign with that big of a discrepancy between the amount of money they spent, the outcome will usually come out in favor of the group that spent more," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz, "That certainly looks like the case in Ohio."
Not only did the Ohio Jobs and Growth Committee outspend their opponents, but they also were much more successful in delivering their message. The anti-gambling group was focused on the stale arguments of years past when opposing casinos.
The pro-gambling organization was focused and organized in delivering their message that casino gambling would do much more good for the state of Ohio than it would bad. The casinos will now be built in Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, and Toledo.
