Connecticut casinos are in the same boat as the Atlantic City casino industry. While revenue continues to sag at casinos in these two gambling destinations, Pennsylvania casinos are picking up customers and threatening to become the new industry leader in the Northeast.
The two Connecticut casinos again saw their gambling revenue drop in January. It was only a decrease of one percent for Mohegan Sun and 2.5% for Foxwoods Resort Casino. The total revenue for Mohegan Sun was $61.8 million, and Foxwoods revenue dropped to $51.6 million.
Last summer, the two separately owned tribal casinos joined forces on a billboard campaign along the New Jersey Turnpike. The basis of the campaign was to attract customers away from Atlantic City. The initial reaction was positive to the campaign, but revenue figures have dropped off in recent months.
Pennsylvania casinos, meanwhile, are taking their game to another level thanks to lawmakers in the state. Already this year, legislators have legalized table games at Pennsylvania casinos. This comes at a time when Pennsylvania casinos passed AC for the first time ever in slot revenue for a month.
The Atlantic City casino industry was hit hard by the economic recession in the US. Revenue has fallen by double digits for many months in a row, and now Pennsylvania poses a real threat to steal away what little customers are left in the once proud city.
New Jersey lawmakers are considering a plan that would allow AC casinos to add sports books. If this plan is realized, it would again vault AC to the top of the gaming industry on the East Coast. In January, casino revenue in AC casinos was down 8.5% from the same period in 2009.
