Casino In New York Contributes Millions For Education
Casino gambling expansion is the hottest way for states to raise revenue these days. For critics of casino gambling, Tioga Downs Casino in New York provides just one example of the millions of dollars a casino can pump into education and the community.
Tioga Downs has been open in Nichols for three years. In that time, the casino has contributed $58 million to the community. Much of that money has gone to education, and that has been by design, with the casino overjoyed by the outcome.
"We want to see future generations do as well or better than we have," said Pete Savage, President of Tioga Downs, "so contributions to education is a win, win for everybody." Even with the large donations, opponents of casino gambling continue to fight expansion.
There will not be much of a battle, however, when Tioga Downs begins to expand. The casino is expected to build a hotel to go with their gaming facilities in the next couple of years. The gaming floor is also most likely going to be expanded.
The state of New York is one of several states on the East Coast that are looking towards casino expansion. Pennsylvania has a casino opening in the next two weeks in Pittsburgh, and Massachusetts lawmakers have started discussions about casino gambling.
In Connecticut, there already are two big tribal casinos. The two casinos have recently joined forces to go after the struggling Atlantic City casinos in the hopes of toppling the gambling mecca.
