Casino Initiatives Stalled in Portland
The sponsors of a package of initiatives aimed for November that would pave the way for a nontribal gambling casino in east Multnomah County abandoned that effort Monday but vowed to return with a set of similar proposals in 2008.
The sponsors, investment adviser Bruce Studer and attorney Matthew Rossman, said they had concluded there is not enough time before a July 7 deadline to gather enough voter signatures to qualify the initiatives for the Nov. 7 ballot.
The two Lake Oswego men said they will refile the casino package for the November 2008 general election in the next few weeks. They also said they will publicly identify members of their ownership group by the end of the year.
"We know that is important to Oregonians," Studer said.
The withdrawal of the casino initiatives means there will be no gambling-related ballot measures on this year's fall ballot. But gambling may still be a major theme in the gubernatorial campaign.
