Casino Petition Language Approved By Ohio Attorney General

Proponents of casino gambling in Ohio must be used to getting what they want. Although they have been turned away in the past, there are still groups that are trying to bring the issue back to voters again.

Voters in the state have already turned away the idea of casinos on several different occasions. A group led by Penn National Gaming wants the issue back on the ballot, but first they must have a petition signed to achieve their November ballot goal.

This past week they moved past the first step in making that happen. Attorney General Richard Cordray approved the summary language for the petition. It had already been turned down once for several different reasons.

Cordray felt the first draft was too vague when it came to the proposed locations of four casinos. The petition language also appeared to exclude casino winnings from taxation.

After reworking the petition language, Cordray accepted the new language. Now, the Ohio Ballot Board will make the determination of whether the casino proposal contains a single constitutional amendment. Once that is done, the group can begin collecting signatures.

In order to get the initiative on the ballot, the group must collect over 400,000 signatures. A recent attempt to bring casinos to Ohio had the required signatures, but residents of the state then voted against the proposal.
