Casino Proposal Getting Support From Sheriff
Sheriff Simon Leis stands behind the push for legislation to include Cincinnati in a state proposal which could put a casino in the Broadway Commons area of downtown. The casino would be in the Hamilton County Jail's backyard. Leis stood with council members touting the money that a casino could possibly bring. Some of that money could go toward a new jail that Hamilton County desperately needs.
"I've been informed that commissioners will announce a funding mechanism for building a new jail within a few weeks," said Sheriff Leis during a speech on the steps of City Hall. "However, operating a large jail costs money and taxes from the casino could help offset that cost. "However, some in the Tri-State including two of three Hamilton County Commissioners think that the proposed site of the casino just outside of the jail would just invite more crime in the already battered neighborhood that borders the proposed site. Commission President Phil Heimlich remembers another measure that was intended to help offset costs.
