Casino Unions Battling Each Other In Atlantic City

Local 54 and the United Auto Workers both want the same thing for their members, fair treatment from Atlantic City casinos. The two unions, however, are approaching their efforts in completely different ways.

Local 54 is upset with the way the UAW is handling their advertising of what is taking place between the casinos and the workers. The UAW has gone on a massive campaign to show everyone in New Jersey that their members are receiving no cooperation from their employers.

Local 54 believes that the tactics being used by the UAW is scaring away customers from the casinos. That is a situation, they claim, that neither the casinos nor the workers can afford.

"With increased competition from Pennsylvania and the worst economic crisis since the Depression, casino companies and their employees need to be working together to ensure Atlantic City's future," read a flier handed out by Local 54 members to casino employees, "Everyone who wants a union should be able to have one, but the UAW's tactics of scaring customers away from our town is bad for the unionized building trades and casino workers."

The UAW represents workers at several Atlantic City casinos, including Bally's Atlantic City and Caesar's Atlantic City. The ads they have been running show gamblers steering clear of the two casinos that the UAW feel are treating their members unfairly.

Atlantic City casino revenue has been down in double digits for several months in a row. Right before the economy crashed, the city had hopes of reviving its glorious past, but the economy has caused many projects to be shut down.
