Majority of Chamber Members Oppose Casino
Businesses in the Grand Cities, based upon preliminary results from The Chamber, are overwhelmingly opposed to the proposed Grand Forks tribal casino. By nearly a 2-to-3 margin, more than 300 chamber members said that, given what they know now, they would not support the casino the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa is planning.
But, according to chamber President Dan Schenkein, about half of those who voted "no" said they did so because there isn't enough information about the proposal. So, by his reckoning, a third support, a third oppose and a third oppose for lack of information. Those opposing the casino for other reasons reported a wide variety of concerns, he said, including the economic impact of gambling to the community, the immorality of gambling and the impact on nonprofit groups that rely on gambling for revenue.
The survey remains open, but the response so far constitutes more than a third of the membership, an extraordinary survey response rate considering the Web-based survey only began Thursday afternoon.
