Casino Windsor Layoffs Due to Smoking Ban
Casino Windsor is laying off nearly 300 union workers and immediately terminating 32 salaried employees due to declining gambling revenues caused by Ontario's smoking ban.
The law, which took effect at the end of May, bans smoking in all public facilities, including bars, restaurants, sporting venues, office buildings and Casino Windsor.
Casino officials also say an unfavorable exchange rate and high gas prices contributed to the decrease in revenues. Analysts predicted a smoking ban at Casino Windsor would cause the casino to lose business to Detroit's casinos, which allow smoking.
