The Ames flooding situation is getting worse and local and state businesses in Iowa are preparing for the worst. Among the industries that will be affected is casino gambling, with attendance expected to be down in the coming days.
Hundreds of residents have had to evacuate their houses after flooding became too high and safety became paramount. Roads, businesses, and other important community operations have been closed due to the flooding.
Casinos in Iowa have already been hurt by a slow summer, and now the flood threatens to reduce revenue even more in August. With many people concerned with their family's safety, not much time is left to travel to casinos this week.
"I have been making sure that all of my aunts, cousins, and other family members have evacuated their homes and are now in a safe place," said Mark Butone. "I was planning on heading out to the casino with some friends tonight, but that obviously is not going to happen now."
Even if gamblers were going to a casino this evening, there is a likely chance that it would take much longer than usual because of the flooding. Others may not even have a route that would land them at the casinos with all of the road closures. Almost a dozen roads have been closed down in some form throughout the day.
The Red Cross has opened shelters for people who have had to evacuate and have no place to go. A regional relief effort is already under way, and it is likely that Iowa may get assistance from the federal government. Several counties have opened relief shelters as well.
