Catskills Casino Push Not Dead, According To Indian Tribe
The Catskills may get their new casino after all. That is if one believes the St. Regis Mohawk tribe when they say that they are prepared to once again try to build a casino in Monticello, New York.
The tribe had tried before to gain approval to build the casino in the Catskills, but the Bush Administration turned down their request. The tribe had a site picked out, but they were told that it was too far from their reservation.
Now, with a new administration in place, the St. Regis Mohawk tribe is hoping the ruling will be overturned. There is no guarantee that will be the case, but the tribe at least feels it is worth the effort to try again.
"The Catskills would be a great place for a new casino," said observer Travis Bens, "There will be access from all of New York, plus, it would be right on the Canadian border."
The tribe will face the same questions and limitations this time around. Their reservation is hundreds of miles from the proposed location of the casino, in Sullivan County. Casino expansion has been taking place in record numbers in the state of New York over the past few years.
Chief Monica Jacobs has indicated that meetings have already taken place between officials of the tribe and the Interior Department. She believes that there is a good chance that the Obama Administration will overturn the ruling made during the Bush Administration.
