Charity Bingo Games Hurt by Bigger Casinos
Casinos in the United States have drawn away customers who once flocked to bingos run by charities that sponsor food pantries or programs for poor children. The bingo games must scramble for new customers as the existing ones reach for big casinos, drawn by big jackpots and attractive surroundings, reports USA Today. A charity bingo manager in Aurora, Colo., told the newspaper her group used to attract 180 to 200 people "whenever you opened the doors.
"But on a Saturday morning recently, fewer than half that number had shown up. She says several bingo halls in the area have closed for lack of business. Gaming regulators, who want to help the charities compete in this environment, are allowing non-profit groups to increase jackpots and use electronic gadgets that make it easier for customers to play several bingo cards at once, says the report.
