Chester Downs Gets Thumbs Up From Community
Though death and taxes might be the only guarantees in life, a betting man could reasonably put a sawbuck on Harrah?s opening a new racetrack and casino in Chester this fall. In the interests of fairness, however, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board conducted a public hearing at Drexel University?s Bossone Building Friday morning to determine the level of community support for such a venture.
"It?s been a long time since an opportunity such as this, the Harrah?s Chester Downs Casino, has graced our fair city," state Rep. Thaddeus Kirkland, D-159, Chester, told Chairman Tad Decker, Mary DiGiacomo Colins and Raymond Angeli, the three PGCB members at the hearing.
If Harrah?s is approved for one of 14 available slots gaming licenses, the "racino" would open Sep. 10 with harness racing and add slot machines in early 2007, generating at least $10 million annually for the city plus $336,000 to $576,000 annually in wage taxes, according to David Sciocchetti, director of the Chester Economic Development Authority.
