Chief Debates Impact of New Rhode Island Casino
The multi-million dollar campaign to win approval for the construction of a top-notch resort and casino gambling site kicked off in West Warwick, Rhode Island.
Meanwhile, in a little white cottage that sits in the middle of the Twin Oaks restaurant parking lot in Cranston like its own little island, opponents of the casino gambling referendum are devising a counter-strategy that expects to raise and spend several million dollars to get voters to reject the proposed amendment.
The battles will be fought mostly in the media, across wide swaths of full-page newspaper ads, and at dueling press conferences, supplemented by "air wars" on radio and television stations across the state. First the two sides must struggle to wrest the attention of viewers and voters who are also being inundated by pitches from candidates from a U.S. Senate race that is commanding nationwide attention and a contest for governor that is tighter than expected in the early going.
Even the campaign for lieutenant governor features primaries in both of the major parties in this unusually active political season. Only when both sides of the casino gaming issue can cut through that clutter can they fight to win the hearts and minds of the Ocean State voter for their respective causes. Like two heavyweight boxers talking trash at the weigh-in ceremony, both sides seem ready to rumble.
