Chinese Speaking Problem Gambling Therapy Drawing Rave Reviews
In the state of California it is almost as if Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger wants the state to pass Nevada as the gambling capital of the US. Casino expansion is running rampant in California and that could lead to many addiction problems.
For English speaking addicts it is not a problem. They can find help in many places where counselors and treatment centers are available. For Chinese gamblers that only speak Chinese, it is not as easy. That is why Eddie Chiu started his therapy group a decade ago.
"We are the first and only one. It's difficult to translate emotions," said Chiu, "So we talk in their home language so they can freely express their inner world."
The Chinese population is the US is known for their gambling habits. Many come to the US because of the easy access they have to casinos and other forms of gambling. For the high rollers the gambling is entertainment, but for others, it means losing thousands of dollars they do not have.
Chiu believes that having a place where Chinese gambling addicts can speak their own language makes them feel more comfortable about talking of their problems. They have a sense of relief that they can express themselves without having to worry about translation.
The game of choice for most Asian gamblers is pai gao, although many have started playing Texas Hold'em. Whatever their game, at least now in the San Francisco area they know that there is a place to go should they veer off course, thanks to Chiu.
