Choctaw Indians Eye Jackson County for Best Casino

Voted Top Online Casino Several Years in a Row!

Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians Chief Phillip Martin has notified the Jackson County Board of Supervisors that the tribe wants to put a new casino on 110 acres it owns near Interstate 10.

Martin in a letter to supervisors said the Mississippi Band intends to put the land in a trust, a first step in the process to have the U. S. Department of the Interior declare it tribal lands, the Sun Herald newspaper in Biloxi reported Friday. He asked supervisors to call a referendum in 2008, the same year as the presidential elections, to determine if there is community support for the development.

"A referendum is the procedure we would take on an issue of casino gambling," said Robert Norvel, president of the Board of Supervisors. Depending upon the wording in a referendum, Jackson County voters could also opt to allow state-licensed casinos that would pay 12 percent of their gross gambling revenues to state and local governments.
