City Council Rallying For Casino At Broadway Commons
Vice-mayor Jim Tarbell and Councilwoman Leslie Ghiz say that the development of a casino in the broadway commons area would spur development, enhance job growth and attract tourism. In a statement released by the two councilmembers, says that nearly $20 million dollars a year could be generated by having a casino in Cincinnati. Ghiz says she would like to see some of that money to to fighting crime, "If we realize millions of dollars in added revenue from a casino, it needs to go toward protecting our citizens."The Ohio Attorney General is reviewing language to place a ballot referendum before voters to allow casino gambling in the state.
The two councilmembers say that heavy lobbying and perceived apathy from the city was what forced Cincinnati off of the possible sites for a casino. The resolution presented by the councilmembers today states that if Cincinnati continues to be left off of the referendum, then city council and Mayor Mark Mallory will fight against the referendum.Stan Eichelbaum, an economic expert says that in order for the city to get the $20 million, the casino will have to make $80 million. That comes from gamblers coming to the area.
