CityCenter Marks Kerkorian's Crowning Achievement With MGM Mirage
Billionaire Kirk Kerkorian is no stranger to redefining Las Vegas casino gambling. Through is MGM Mirage company, Kerkorian has been instrumental in several changes to Las Vegas over the past half century.
Now, Kerkorian has added what some believe to be the most beautiful spectacle that has ever been built in Las Vegas. The CityCenter project which started five years ago, is close to being completed, and some parts of the project have already been opened to the public.
While it was Murren's idea, much of the credit for making CityCenter a reality goes to Kerkorian. He is ninety-two years old, but that did not stop him from having a major influence over the construction of CityCenter. It is also what Kerkorian believes is his biggest contribution to Las Vegas.
"Of all the wonderful Las Vegas properties with which I've been associated, CityCenter is simply the most amazing," said Kerkorian, "I'm extremely excited to see the public's reaction and look forward to seeing how it changes Las Vegas."
The project is expected to help Las Vegas turn around their recent gaming slump. The economy has caused major decreases in revenue for some of the largest casinos on the Strip, and owners are hopeful that CityCenter will bring people back to Sin City.
The project cost $8.5 billion to build, and at times it looked as though that price may keep the project from being completed. MGM Mirage has partnered with Dubai World in the CityCenter project. After some contentious times, the two companies settled their differences earlier this year and proceeded to complete the project.
