A computer chip that is inserted into the body that keeps people from gambling, that is what has been invented by a Quebec businessman. Early returns are that the device actually works.

Chantal Audet is a businessman from Quebec who feels he has invented the answer for people who want to curb their gambling habit. One computer chip is placed inside the body, and another is placed inside the machines at the casino.

When the person who has the chip inside of them walks by a machine, the machine immediately would go blank. That would stop the person from being capable of gambling on the machine.

The chip was invented for Loto-Quebec, but they have since balked at the idea of using the chip. They have not ruled it out, they are simply waiting for the Health Ministry to rule on the chip.

"It is not for us to make this decision. Other authorities must first make them," said Marie-Claude Rivet, a spokeswoman for Loto-Quebec. Others believe that Loto-Quebec pulled out of using the chip because they need problem gamblers to raise revenue.

"Loto-Quebec's decision wasn't surprising, because according to health officials most of the revenues coming from electronic games come from people struggling with problem gambling," said an expert on addictions, Alain Dubois.

The chip still has to clear the hurdle of the Health Ministry. It must be inserted into the body by surgery. It would be done voluntarily and could easily be removed if the person chose to do so.
